Anything BUT Conservative
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has purchased first-class
tickets, and now he’s busy putting your progeny on a luxury plane to a
wealthy and posperous future. Canadians are truly blessed!
But as you wave goodbye to your kids and grandchildren, there’s one tiny
— but important — detail that our distinguished prime minister hasn’t divulged.
Chances are better than 95 percent that this plane will crash and burn.
Our children and grandchildren will inhabit a world that looks nothing
like the one we’ve enjoyed because of global warming. It’s that serious,
and we’re running out of time.
The Conservatives’ future is one in which pieces of countries in the developing
world are literally wiped off the map; a future in which wars are cruelly
commonplace, as people in developing world fight over scarce resources
and marginal land for farming; a world in which hundreds of millions won't
have access to water; a future in which North American
catastrophes like Hurricane Katrina are so frequent that they’ll garner
just a few column inches below the fold on page six.
To survive, your children will be forced to become unfeeling automatons,
or they’ll live with an eternal heartache that makes their existence just
this side of unbearable.
This is Stephen Harper’s legacy if he doesn’t choose another path. To
swipe his own phrase, he’s screwing the country, and most of the world
while he's at it. On the international stage, Canada has become an
international pariah, and the worst of the worst, one of only two developed
nations on the planet that refuses to meet our environmental responsibilities.
And that intransigence makes an international climate deal in Copenhagen
next year almost impossible.
It's curious that our Prime Minister is so ill-informed when it comes
to global warming. Whenever
Harper speaks about the climate change, he spouts misinformation
about Canada’s shameful environmental record.
And that's why we've launched Project ABC — Anything But Conservative.
We haven't inherited this world from our ancestors, we're borrowing it
from our children, and our grandchildren. But this site isn't just about climate
change, for investment in clean
technology and renewable energy also has the potential to give
us a strong and resilient economy. We
won't be able to afford the things that makes Canada great if we don't
prepare for a future based on renewable energy. We also offer a plan to Vote
Strategically to ensure that fewer Conservatives get elected.
But we don't hate Conservatives. We just have an issue with this particular
government, and its lack of vision for the future. We believe that
Harper's Conservatives have taken the easy road, and sacrificed the welfare
of tomorrow's Canadians for political expediency and partisan politics
today.
Throughout the world, many Conservatives possess a strong sense of responsibility
and ownership for the problems that we've created in becoming a wealthy
society. In the UK, Lord Nicholas Stern, former Chief Economist for the
World Bank, has become a passionate advocate for tackling global warming
now, when the costs are just affordable, rather than 10 or 15 years down
the road, when they will bankrupt us and millions will suffer. Angela Merkel,
Germany's conservative Chancellor, is promising to cut carbon emissions
by 40 percent by 2020, because it's a moral imperative, and it makes smart
business sense.
Global warming shouldn't be a Conservative issue, or a Liberal issue;
it is a matter for all humanity.
If you want to know why even fiscal conservatives need to vote Anything
But Conservative, you'll find plenty here to consider.
